That tightness of movement you have in parts of your body means you are functioning below your real potential. We all have a certain lack of flexibility/mobility and it slows us down. That’s why we learn to avoid certain actions — and why, with a little professional advice, we could solve minor aches and pains, and even chonic pains so much easier.

But Beyond Pain…

If suppleness, control and fluid movement are the upside of un-restricted mobility, then the downside is very bad indeed – painful in short. Achieving full mobility should be ignored by those at their own peril. Don’t kid yourself — if you have never received up-to-date advice on mobility drills it is only a matter of when immobility and subsequently pain catches up with you.

But Why Mobility Drills Instead of Stretching?

 

Dangers of Stretching Improperly:

Forcing flexibility via improper stretching can actually do more damage than good. It could:

1 – Further destabilize joints and create hyper mobility. This is not good. Too much mobility leads to further joint destruction.

2 – Cause micro-tearing to our muscles which will induce further bracing (see below for why bracing occurs) and scar tissue formation.

 

Instead, dynamic mobility exercises work within your pre-existing Range of Motion (ROM) to slowly release degrees of freedom in a comfortable, safe, and effective manner. Beginning slowly with simple mobility drills and building up to more complex drills is natural and easy when you have a simple step-by-step formula to follow.

It’s important to remember that stretching helps to improve your static (non-moving) flexibility and may not do such a good job at preparing your body to move fluidly and efficiently without pain. That’s why I recommend that you focus on ‘dynamic mobility exercises‘ daily. In addition, stretching can be dangerous to your joints if your joints are bracing and thus shortening their muscles in order to protect themselves.

And finally, how to intuitively sequence the movements so you create a program that is suited for YOU, at this very moment!

 

Protective bracing is one of the leading causes to joint stiffness and immobility!

 

Many things can act as precursors to joint bracing from minor injuries to absolute improper use of the joint and poor posture to begin with. Either way, the end result is that muscles around the joint brace to protect it and the joint begins to compress. Compression leads to further destruction of the joint, and muscles brace even stronger. Do you see a vicious-cycle rearing it’s ugle head here?

Furthermore, this compression of the joints is associated with all sorts of pain syndromes, arthritis being the most well-known.

 

Joint mobility drills are thus superior for de-compressing your joints, simply because we are working with what’s available and not forcing anything!

 

As you move through the Range of Motion (ROM) that you have available to you (a key concept) you beging to syngergistically de-compress the joint by lubricating it and moving vital synovial fluid around which immediately acts to provide nutrition to the joint surfaces while at the same time actually strengthening the muscles that control and cross that joint. So these muscles actually lengthen and stregthen and allow a decompression of the joint to occur, which helps to rebuild it! Sounds great huh? Must be complicated then?

 

No, not at all!!! In fact it’s so simple that it can boggle your mind.

 

That said, in the beginning, and especially if you haven’t moved freely for some time expect to have some associated soreness as those muscles begin release restriction and move efficiently again – although this is one of those good-pain type experiences :)

Hey Guys,

I just wanted to drop a few comments in here to say that your Pain Free Mobility program is exactly how it sounds.

I’ve taken all your courses and have your ABT DVD’s, so when this one came out I knew it was going to be high quality.

Within one week the pain in my shoulders and upper body from being a massage therapist has decreased drastically improving my quality of life and bringing the fun and passion back in my work.

The routines are easy and simple to follow usually taking me about 10 minutes a day to complete. I admit, I haven’t been doing them everyday now that I am painfree, but being painfree gives me more time to do the others things in life I enjoy. :)
